Food for the Hungry Health Programming and Behavior Change Tools

Barrier Analysis (BA)

Description: BA is a rapid assessment tool used in community health and development projects to identify behavioral determinants or obstacles associated with a desired behavior. Once these determinants have been identified, more effective behavior change messages, strategies and activities can be developed to overcome these determinants for change.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: program design
  • Materials available: Facilitator's Training Manual (110 pages)
  • Suggested training time: One, four day workshop
  • Online access: http://barrieranalysis.fhi.net/
  • BA Results Reporting Tabulation Template - Click Here
  • Knowledge, Practice, Coverage Methodology (KPC) Training

Description: The KPC is a population-based survey that provides estimates with a known precision for given health indicators. The trainings help staff to develop a KPC timeline, train interviewers and supervisors, calculate sample size, and develop questionnaires for survey design.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: prior to baseline
  • Materials available:
  • 1. KPC Training of Survey Trainers (TOST)
  • 2. KPC Survey Training: Participants Manuals and Workbooks
  • 3. KPC Survey Training: Trainer's Guides (zip file)
  • 4. Suggested training time: (TOST) One, ten day workshop (80 hours)
  • 5. Online access: http://www.coregroup.org/working_groups/kpc_training/welcome.html and www.childsurvival.com/tools/mon_eval.cfm
  • Local Determinants of Malnutrition study

Description: This survey is conducted to compare mothers of positive deviant children to mothers of malnourished children to facilitate the design of health and nutrition interventions. Most positive deviance (PD) studies focus on feeding practices, child care practices and care seeking practices. FH's PD study is designed to provide greater insight into all the factors that contribute to malnutrition - i.e. food and feeding practices, child care practices, care seeking practices as well as psychosocial and other environmental factors, and mothers' worldview. This study highlights factors associated with malnutrition and does not address causality. The results of the local determinants study provide insight to what practices and foods should be promoted in each country context, and what additional interventions should be added to health and nutrition programs.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: program design, throughout
  • Materials available: Surveys
  • Suggested Training time: One, five day workshop
  • Final Paper LDM Expanded PD Study-June 2008
  • Training Notes
  • Use of Expanded PD Questionnaire
  • Lot Quality Assurance

Sampling (LQAS) Trainer's Guide Description: This instruction guide helps one plan, monitor, and evaluate community health programs using a simple rapid method for data collection. The guide contains six modules covering the purposes of LQAS, where to conduct the surveys, who to interview, the type of questions needed and how to use the data after it is collected.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: Prior to baseline - or during the program for general monitoring and evaluation purposes.
  • Materials available: Trainer and Participant's Guide (120 pages)
  • Suggested training time: not available
  • Online access: http://www.coregroup.org/working_groups/lqas_train.html
  • Quality Improvement Verification Checklist (QIVC)

Description: QIVCs are short checklists used to encourage, assess and improve a trainer, health worker, counselor, or volunteer's performance. QIVCs are best utilized with activities that can be observed, have multiple steps, and are repeated throughout the cycle of the program.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: throughout
  • Materials available: Checklists are available for each of the following tasks:
  • 1. Education Sessions by Community Health Workers
  • 2. Individual Counseling by Community Health Workers
  • 3. Non formal Education Methods: Use of Stories
  • 4. Focus Group Preparation and Facilitation
  • 5. Evaluation of Trainers
  • 6. Quality Improvement on Stories
  • 7. Suggested Training time: one day
  • Program Approaches and Techniques

    Positive Deviance/Hearth Approach

Description: A community based nutrition rehabilitation program that addresses childhood malnutrition in resource poor settings. This approach identifies and shares solutions (practices) already being used by community members with well nourished children who have no access to special resources (positive deviants). By identifying and using demonstrably successful local practices and resources and promoting behavior change by doing, caregivers and communities are empowered to take responsibility for nutritionally rehabilitating and maintaining good growth and health in their children.
  • Materials available: Training guide
  • Suggested Training Time:not available
  • Online access: See Below

    Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Description: MI is a counseling technique for behavior change. It helps to increase a person’s inner motivation to change by exploring and helping them to resolve ambivalence about a new behavior. It has been especially effective in curbing addictive behaviors such as smoking and drug abuse.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: throughout
  • Materials available: MI Training Facilitators Guide (110 pages), MI Training Participant Guide (42 pages) and video clips.
  • Suggested training time: One, three day workshop
  • Online access: http://mi.fhi.net
  • Care Groups

Description: Written by World Relief, this guide explains the use of care groups as a strategy to achieve large-scale program coverage. Ten to fifteen community-based volunteer health educators meet regularly with paid project staff for training, supervision, and support, and in turn multiply these efforts to reach large numbers of beneficiaries. The guide gives the care group rationale and gives step by step guidance about implementing and using them in sustainable programming.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: program design
  • Materials available: The Care Group Difference
  • Suggested training time: not available
  • Online access: Care Group Manual
  • Management of Severe Malnutrition

Description: Throughout the world, thousands of severely malnourished children die unnecessarily during hospital treatment. FH’s policy has been to refer all severely malnourished children to a hospital/clinical setting. However, clinical observations demonstrated that many of these children were improperly cared for – in some instances put in life threatening situations. Therefore to empower FH staff to train clinical staff in the proper management of children with malnutrition, FH conducted an 8 hour training introducing staff to training materials developed by Ann Ashworth et. al. at the London School of Hygiene and Tropic Medicine. These training materials (Trainers Guide) are to be used in the training of clinical staff to provide nurses with specific skills and knowledge to enable them to improve the quality of care of severely malnourished children. The training workshop is organized around 10 essential treatment steps.
  • Time of implementation into the program cycle: throughout
  • Materials available: Training Manual for TOT
  • Suggested Training time: five day workshop for nurses
  • Online access: Elluminate session (Introduction to the Trainer’s Manual and the 10 steps in the Management of Children with Severe Malnutrition).
  • Online Training Resources

Food for the Hungry’s health team frequently uses online Elluminate sessions to train and update staff on new findings in health research. By clicking on the links below, a new browser window will open allowing you to access the recorded trainings.
