This United Nations Multi-country Study on Men and Violence was carried out from 2010 to 2013 and used multiple methodologies— quantitative, qualitative and policy analysis—at the national and regional levels to build a nuanced understanding of violence against women and masculinity across the region.  Specifically, the study was based on the premise that, because men are the primary perpetrators of violence, research directly with men was needed to understand the underlying drivers of violence perpetration in order to transform the culture which makes violence by men against women a societal norm, even when sanctioned.
